THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles on Earth — often called “The World’s Greatest Wildlife Show.” Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, journey across the vast Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem in search of greener pastures and water.

This epic migration follows a circular route between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, driven by seasonal rainfall patterns. Between July and October, the herds move into the Maasai Mara, where dramatic river crossings at the Mara River take place — a heart-stopping scene filled with life-and-death struggles as predators like crocodiles and lions lie in wait.

  • July – August: The herds begin crossing into Maasai Mara from the Serengeti. This is the best time to witness the famous Mara River crossings.
  • September – October: The herds spread across the Mara plains, offering excellent game-viewing opportunities with lion, cheetah, and hyena hunting action.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION

During the Great Wildebeest Migration, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles move in a continuous cycle through the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem following the rains and the growth of fresh grass. The journey is full of incredible drama and survival challenges.

It begins in the southern Serengeti around January to March, where most of the wildebeest calves are born — almost 500,000 calves within a few weeks. This attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, turning the plains into a scene of both new life and danger.

As the dry season approaches, the herds start moving northwards in search of water and greener grass, crossing rivers such as the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. The Mara River crossing (from July to October) is the most dramatic phase of the migration — thousands of animals plunge into crocodile-filled waters, with many not making it across.

After feeding in the lush plains of Maasai Mara, the herds slowly make their way back south toward the Serengeti as the short rains begin, completing the endless circle of life.
